From now until January 1st, 2014, I will donate 50 cents from the sale of every copy of WHITE ZOMBIE toward the Charity: Water campaign. They use 100% of all public donations to fund water projects, proving where every dollar goes with photos and GPS coordinates.

Diseases from unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war and zombies.  Children are especially vulnerable, as their bodies aren’t strong enough to fight diarrhea, dysentery and other illnesses. Personally, I am quite fond of children.

90% of the 30,000 deaths that occur every week from unsafe water and unhygienic living conditions are in children under five years old.  The WHO reports that over 3.6% of the global disease burden can be prevented simply by improving water supply, sanitation, and hygiene.

Almost everywhere charity: water builds a freshwater well, they also require sanitation training. In some communities, they build latrines; at the very least, they promote simple hand-washing stations made with readily-available materials. Clean water can greatly alleviate the world’s disease burden, but only with education and hygienic practice. charity: water is committed to using water as a gateway to sanitary living.

In other words, they donate not only the water needed for people to survive, but the basic skills of survival that are associated with clean water and hygiene. This is something every zombie fan can understand.
