So Civil War was a HUGE deal for Marvel. As a guy trying to break into comics at the time, there was nowhere you could hide from this juggernaut of a crossover. I pretty much hated from the beginning, but like shitty weed you keep smoking, hoping you’ll finally catch a buzz. About the second or third issue I decided to write the ending to the book. I wrote an ending I thought would work, based on where the MU was headed, something that would make sense. What we GOT was this:

Here is my ending.

CIVIL WAR

The End?

by Richard Evans

Page 1

Panel 1:
Cap leans against the wall. Iron Man has him cornered, there is no place left to run. The last rays of the setting sun cut through the holes in the walls of the demolished building, forming barriers of light and shadow between the two men.

IRON MAN

STEVE, IT’S OVER.

STAND DOWN.

CAPTAIN AMERICA

YOUR ON THE WRONG

SIDE TONY, CAN’T YOU

SEE THAT??

Panel 2:
Iron Man steps closer, Cap moves into a defensive position.

IRON MAN

HOW CAN YOU

SAY THAT, WHEN

YOU WEAR THAT

FLAG ON YOUR BACK?
HOW CAN YOU

SPIT ON YOUR OWN

GOVERNMENT LIKE THIS?

WE’RE ON THE SIDE

OF THE LAW, STEVE.

Panel 3:
WIDE SCREEN PANEL: Cap charges towards Iron Man, his shield pulled back and ready.

Panel 4:
LARGE PANEL: Iron Man releases a full scale Uni-Beam blast from his chest directly at Captain America.

Page 2

Panel 1:

Cap throws his shield at the very moment the uni-beam is initiated.

Panel 2:
As the shield flies at Iron Man, the uni-beam is released. As it strikes the shield, the beam is split in two, right in the middle, causing the beam to go around Captain America.

Panel 3:
With a huge metallic clang, the shield punctures Iron Man’s chest plate, smashing the uni-beam and sticking out of the chest plate.

Panel 4:
Tony looks down at the shield in his armor.

Page 3

Panel 1:
Tony removes the shield from his chest, a wave of sparks shoot out from the crack in the armor.

IRON MAN

IT’S OVER STEVE.

YOUR BIO-READINGS

ARE CRASHING,

YOU’RE ON MINUTE AWAY

FROM COLLAPSING.

CAPTAIN AMERICA

I’LL FIGHT YOU

UNTIL THE END.

Panel 2:
Iron Man drops the shield on the ground and raises his iron gauntlet.

IRON MAN

I’VE BEEN TRYING

TO TELL YOU ALL

ALONG STEVE, THIS

IS THE END.

Panel 3:
CLOSE-UP: The repulsor beam lights up inside the palm of Iron Man’s hand.

Panel 4:

Suddenly an arrow smashes into Tony’s raised arm, spilling a liquid across his forearm and hand.

IRON MAN

WHA. . .? ARROWS?

HOW CAN ANYONE

EXPECT TO STOP

ME WITH. .

WAIT A MINUTE!

Page 4

Panel 1:
A corrosive rust spreads along Tony’s arm.

IRON MAN

SOME SORT OF CHEMICAL,

CAUSING A RUSTING ACTION!

OFF PANEL

FIGURED YOU’D HAVE

LEARNED BY NOW

TONY.

Panel 2:
SPLASH PANEL: Tony looks up in shock at the return of HAWKEYE and MOCKINGBIRD.

HAWKEYE

YOU NEVER

WERE A MATCH

FOR ME, IRON MAN.

Page 5

Panel 1:
Tony begins to walk closer to Hawkeye who sits above in the rafters.

IRON MAN

A RUST ARROW?
THAT’S YOUR

BIG RETURN?

MY SYSTEMS HAVE

ALREADY NEUTRALIZED

THE CHEMICAL REACTION.

I SHOULDN’T BE

SURPRISED TO SEE YOU

HERE, YOU ALWAYS

SEEM TO BE ON THE WRONG

SIDE, DON’T YOU?

Panel 2:

Hawkeye raises the bow to his eye, taking aim.

HAWKEYE

IT’S OVER TONY.

YOU BETRAYED

EVERYTHING THE AVENGERS

STOOD FOR. YOUR NOTHING WITHOUT

THAT SUIT, A SHELL OF A MAN.

Panel 3:

Iron Man moves closer. Mockingbird steps closer as well, ready to move.

IRON MAN

THIS FROM A

GUY WHO DEPENDS

ON A BOW AND ARROW

SET.

MOCKINGBIRD

HEY, I’M SURE CLINT

WILL DROP THE BOW

AND GO ROUNDS WITH

YOU, MR. BIG SHOT.

DROP THE ARMOR, BE A MAN

FOR ONCE.

Page 6

Panel :
Captain America moves quickly, grabbing Iron Man while Mockingbird leaps at him.

Panel 2:
Iron Man activates a force pulse, sending Cap and Mockingbird flying.

IRON MAN

GET OFF ME!

Panel 3:
CLOSE-UP: Iron Man turns his head toward Hawkeye. The archer remained standing in the same spot, waiting, holding his aim.

IRON MAN

NO MORE TALK,

NO MORE WAR.

IT ENDS NOW!

HAWKEYE

STAND DOWN, TONY.

I MEAN IT.

Panel 4:

Hawkeye shoots an arrow that wraps a steel cable around and around Iron Man.

Page 7

Panel 1:
Iron Man easily snaps the steel cables around him.

IRON MAN

YOU LECTURE ME

ABOUT BEING AN

AVENGER? I WAS THERE

AT THE BEGINNING!

I PAID FOR EVERYTHING!
EVEN YOUR SECOND RATE

WEST COAST TEAM!

ALL OF IT!

Panel 2:

Tony Stark is losing his temper, the eyes of the suit glow, a light shines from the shield split in the chest plate of his armor. Hawkeye leaps to the ground on the other side of the room, leaving an open space between them. Cap and Mockingbird lay motionless on the ground.

TONY STARK

I’M TIRED OF THIS!

I’VE TOLERATED

YOU PEOPLE BELITTLING

MY ACCOMPLISHMENTS

ALL THESE YEARS, BECAUSE

LIKE LITTLE CHILDREN,

YOU COULDN’T GRASP

THE BIG PICTURE!

Panel 3:
CLOSER: Tony continues marching toward Hawkeye. An arrow ricochets off the armor and into the rafters.

TONY STARK

I’VE GIVEN THE WORLD

MORE THAN YOU COULD EVER IMAGINE!

I EVEN BUILT HALF YOUR ARROWS!

Panel 4:
CLOSE-UP: To Hawkeye, who is now getting angry himself.

HAWKEYE

YEAH, YOU BUILT

THE ONES THAT KILLED ME.

Page 8

Panel 1:
Iron Man freezes, stopping a couple dozen feet from Hawkeye.

HAWKEYE

YOU BUILT THE

HIGH EXPLOSIVE

ARROWS THAT KILLED

ME TONY. SIMPLE AS

THAT.

Panel 2:
For a moment, Tony stands, confused as to his next move should be.

Panel 3:
Raising his arms, Tony prepares both his repulsor rays.

IRON MAN

THEN I’LL HAVE TO

PUT YOU BACK IN

THE GRAVE, CLINT.

Panel 4:
Faster than the eye can see, the arrow whizzes from the bow, Hawkeye’s face is grim, even menacing.

HAWKEYE

I DOUBT IT TONY.

YOU JUST DON’T HAVE

THE HEART FOR IT.

Page 9

Panel 1:
FULL PAGE SPREAD:

Tony looks down. Sticking out of his chest is an arrow. Hawkeye, with his uncanny skill, managed to sink the arrow right into the crack caused by Cap’s shield in Iron Man’s chest plate. Now the arrow is lodged right into Iron Man’s heart.

Panel 2:
Like a lifeless statue, the lights go dead in the Iron Man armor and Tony drops to his knees. Dead? Perhaps. . .
