I wanted to pitch this to DC a while back. My take on the concept was this:

Random strangers would get a phone call. The caller would be listed as HERO. The person on the other end would be given super powers for 24 hours. Anyone could receive the call, without even knowing why. Would you answer the call?

Edward McGee, a young blue-collar worker and his girlfriend Stephanie sit on the patio of an expensive diner in the thriving club district of Metropolis.

STEPHANIE (1) SO SHE SAYS, WELL WHAT IF I DON’T WANT TO?

CUT TO: The HERO dial, the H brightly illuminated. It seems to be sitting on a table, resting against something black.

PANEL 3

BACK TO: The Metropolis restaurant. Stephanie continues to talk while Ed looks up in the sky at something.

STEPHANIE (2) SO HE’S LIKE, WITH THAT ANNOYING VOICE HE HAS, “MEN LIKE ME DON’T FALL OUT OF THE SKY.”

PANEL 4

Once again we see the HERO dial, this time the letter E is glowing.

PAGE TWO – THREE

TWO PAGE SPREAD

The customers of the restaurant jump up in shock and fear as SUPERMAN, beaten badly by METALLO, is driven into the street. Metallo holds Superman by the throat and has smashes him into the concrete; the green glow of his kryptonite heart weakens Superman and the man of steel struggles in vain to pry off Metallo’s steel grip.

INSERT PANEL

In the bottom right corner, the HERO dial leans against a black telephone; the two seem to be connected together. Now the R glows brightly.

WAITER (2) BATMAN’S JUST AN URBAN MYTH.

Ed watches the fight in shock, unsure of what to do. Stephanie starts arguing with the waiter.

STEPHANIE (3) NO HE ISN’T! I‘VE SEEN VIDEO ON THE NET!

Back to the HERO dial, the last letter, the O, is now glowing.

PANEL 4

Superman tries again to use his heat vision as Metallo continues choking him, this time the deflected beams burn across the top of the patio restaurant. Everyone on the patio ducks for cover as debris rains down on them. Ed pulls Stephanie down under a table.
